Walking through a music convention last year, my kids had to witness me totally losing it to this random guy playing a baritone. None of the impressive playing on Instagram could have prepared us for what we witnessed that day: absolute disbelief of this happy looking young dude in a hoodie playing a baritone guitar like nobody’s business.We smiled and waved to him as we walked by without finding out his name, leaving in a literal daze over how incredible his playing is.
A few days later, his videos started popping up on YouTube and it made sense that this was the “generational guitarist” than Al DiMeola and Steve Vai have raved about. Matteo is the real deal.
He walked the red carpet quite unassumingly and went back to staring at his phone.
After asking him a few lame questions (video to follow), his band played a Jeff Beck tune and one of his own rocking tunes before going out on a sold out mini tour for the first time in the US. There were many truly great guitar players that evening, but Matteo brought in a way that will bring guitar playing to a new level.
