THE DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER (FROM DOWN UNDER) 8-4-2022

The Australian Pink Floyd Tour touched down in Thousand Oaks for a night of Aussie-Centric Floyd music to a near capacity crowd at the user friendly Fred Kavli Theater for an unforgettable night of sound and vision.
This troupe is not your average tribute band, implementing sophisticated production values that separates them from most cover bands. A round video screen (similar to real P.F.) was used to great extent projecting a vast array of Aussie influenced imagery and slow motion photography, heavily employed in actual Floyd concerts of yore. Fog machines, laser displays, and even a 15ft inflatable, hopping Pink Kangaroo added to the spectacle.
Choosing “Obscured by Clouds”(a little known deep cut) as the opening selection set the tone for the rabid Floyd fans. Many attendees were seen wearing all sorts of vintage Pink Floyd concert tee shirts from all phases of their prestigious career. I admit that unexpected opening track was a welcome surprise and one of my faves of the evening.,
The aforementioned video screen leaned heavily on Aussie influenced iconology, kangaroos, the AustralianTopography, a collage of Crocodile Dundee, fellow Aussie musicians Kylie Minogue, Men at Work, AC/DC, and INXS. The prism logo was used extensively in whimsical, creative integration.
APFS embarked on their mission in 1988 and has undergone several personnel changes. It’s obvious the current line-up is dedicated to bringing an authentic re-imagining of the P.F experience and executed with deft and precision. I noticed the 2 guitar players look across the stage sharing knowing smiles with each other as they gleefully traded glorious David Gilmour licks.
Fun Fact: Mr. Gilmour was so impressed with APFS that he invited them to play at his 50th birthday festivities. High praise indeed!
Paying homage to former P.F founding member and acid casualty Syd Barret they performed “Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V”) Another high note was the inclusion of “Astronomy Domine” from the overlooked 4th record “Ummagumma”, a psychedelic masterpiece!.
All in all the stellar (almost 2 hour) tribute was a sonic tip of the hat to one of Rock music’s most revered and beloved bands of all time. Good show mates!
