There is a common denominator in all of them, which is hope, I was inspired by different events that happened in my life, all of which brought me to be very strong and more in tune with the true meaning of life. Do You Believe is a song about hope, life affirming even in pain and grief. Tomorrow was actually inspired by a series of books I was reading at the time, the Divergent trilogy, a strong female hero, bringing new life to a broken society. The Answer is what we look for when we are in a life affirming moment, usually hard to find but inside of us. Run through the Moments is a song about relationships, the ones that end and you don’t remember why, but things often come to an end to create new beginnings.
It was at a club called 217 in Santa Monica, on Broadway, lovely place, Jason Mraz used to play there too, it’s a pity it doesn’t exist anymore. We used to have parties after the show at the hotel next door, good times! How did you and Stephen Perkins meet?
He is an awesome guy, great vibe about him, I love when he plays on the songs I write, he brings a great energy.
Yes! I have been working on the next set of songs and they are shaping up beautifully so I look forward to it!
Wow, it’s really hard to choose, I saw Coldplay’s show at the Greek and it was incredible. Alessia Cara was opening for them and sounded great, so they would be amazing to tour with.
My designs were often compared to Balenciaga in the beginning, I love Henry Beguelin, retro and with a focus on high end materials. I have been doing boho for two decades now so I have been a bit of a precursor in that sense, but I like being a niche designer, more indie, alternative, like my music.
The Seventies and the Nineties, and I am not surprised, I love music and fashion because they define an era, those were decades with profound changes and people had a to to say, they expressed themselves openly and didn’t try to conform, because that wasn’t cool.
In many ways, it has evolved because of manufacturing, many brands started making overseas, trying to save and the quality went down, but things were able to speed up, styles come up and go out much faster. it’s more disposable, less of a mystery because of the internet, less romanticized and chic. That’s why designers like me found their way in Asia for example. I only manufacture in Italy, in these boutique factories that take their time and still work like artisans. There is a little more poetry in that.
Who are your favorite songwriters?
I have a very long list of them but I fell in love with Susanne Vega’s way of communicating a story very early on. She is brilliant. Linda Perry is an amazing song maker and I have mad respect for her work.
I also really liked Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill album, it felt like a journal, jotted down and very honest.
What was it like working with Warren Huart?
It was brilliant, so much fun. We sort of dove into the creative process by talking about music, art and all sorts of things, getting to know each other and bonding at a personal level first. We have a lot of similar taste and a European take on things so we got along really well. I had the songs recorded in my home studio first but they sort of took another life as Warren started putting his own touches on the music, it was a blend of our styles and I just loved recording vocals in his studio.
