If you survived the 1970’s like I did, you and I experienced some of the greatest music ever recorded. The singer/songwriter era blossomed and endured during that decade and as the 80’s bore down upon us the musical future indeed looked bright. Boy were we wrong…however, in-spite of the music waste land that seemed to be leveled upon us there were those moments of brilliance with MTV shinning the way. One such band making great music was BERLIN, an L.A. based band that created New Wave/Pop music with substance and charm and snappy tunes that brought radiant light to radio and music television.
Last Saturday night BERLIN headlined the Starlight Bowl in Burbank CA with Terri Nunn and the band seemingly time-warping themselves right smack into mid 2016 and didn’t skip a beat. Terri Nunn seems ageless taking the stage to a welcome wall-to-wall audience and she did not disappoint them. Even going so far as to riding the shoulders of a local strong man who carried her up the steep incline of the bowl so Terri could sing within the crowd. And the band….WOW! With Carlton Bost on lead guitar, Dave Schulz on Keyboards & Chris Olivas on drums the band took selected songs from Berlin’s catalog along with a couple of cover songs and blazed them to life with a vibrant freshness that made them feel very alive and contemporary. Original member Dave Diamond joined the band for a handful of songs which gave Terri Nunn the opportunity to say that she and Dave along with popular original member John Crawford had reunited to begin writing and recording new original material. The crowd went wild.
