JOHN 5 (Facebook Twitter Website) interviewed with CRN at the Ventura stop of the Mad Monster Tour with Doyle, where he discussed his current tour and the VIP experience, his new and upcoming releases, including his “Greatest Hits Vol. 1” — a retrospective of 11 years of solo work, the special guests at his tour stop at the Whisky (Rob Zombie, Paul Gilbert and Doyle), the upcoming Tony MacAlpine benefit, his thoughts on music education, his take on YouTube, and, of course, the guitar in general.
Discovery Ventura is a very interesting concert venue/ bowling alley in a nice beach town that’s much closer to Santa Barbara than Los Angeles, which gives the concert-going experience there a completely different vibe than the Hollywood show we attended early this year. This was a great opportunity to see a true guitar legend in an intimate setting — and the show took place during a relatively early time slot on a nice post-summer Sunday evening.
Backed by his formidable rhythm section known as “The Creatures” (Ian Ross on bass and Rodger Carter on drums), John 5 proceeded to deliver an amazing and diverse display of guitar heroics throughout his set that highlighted his jaw-dropping guitar technique and expansive vocabulary of licks and a sheer mastery of many musical styles to the appreciative and stunned crowd. His instrumental set included several tracks from his “Greatest Hits” collection (available now in digital format, physical copies are at shows and will be on his website on Black Friday), including his version of “Beat It” (Video: JOHN 5 Performs Cover Of MICHAEL JACKSON’s ‘Beat It’ In Ventura via BLABBERMOUTH.NET)
The show then concluded with a medley that is a veritable “name that tune” for rock and metal fans.
